Early birds in Oxford

9 oktober 2016 - Oxford, Verenigd Koninkrijk

So Sunday morning we went on the oxford trip, at 7am! we left from Leeds and headed to Oxford. It was so early that we were even able to see the sunrise from the bus.... After about three and a half hours of driving (and sleeping) we arrived at Oxford. We started off with a tour of the city and learned a bit more about the city itself. Unfortunately we chose the day to go to oxford when there was a half marathon going on… This meant that we weren’t able to visit everything and that the city, of course, was crowded.

After the tour we were free to go and discover Oxford by ourselves. Me, an Australian girl and another Dutch guy wandered around for a bit and then decided to climb the University Church of St Mary the Virgin. We had to wait in line for about 20 minutes before we could go up to the tower, but apparently we were lucky because after that the waiting time doubled. When we finally reached the tower we had the most beautiful view of the city. And right in front of us was the Radcliffe Camera, “one of the city’s most photographed buildings”. It is a beautiful library which unfortunately is not open for public. We stayed up there for quite a bit just admiring the view.

When we finally got down we decided to go and see the Christ Church, “the largest of all of Oxford’s colleges and the one with the grandest quad.” This was honestly the most beautiful college I have ever seen and could have ever imagined. I however was not the only one who thought that, because the place was crowded with tourists. Apparently this college was also used as a location for the Harry Potter films, which explained the enormous amounts of tourists. We wandered around a bit and then found ourselves in a huge dining hall, which was used to film the dining hall parts in the Harry Potter films. This one was just astonishing, and the part that surprised me the most is that the students of Oxford have their dinners there!

When we finally thought we had seen it all, we started to search for a place to eat something and ended up finding a cute little place in a kind of deserted looking alley. After we had an delicious and cheap meal we headed back to the bus to go home again.
