Road tripping through Scotland

19 december 2016 - Edinburgh, Verenigd Koninkrijk

Day 1, we picked up the car in Edinburgh and started driving towards the lochmond National park. On the way we stopped at the beautiful Stirling castle and a lidl to do some grocery shopping. When we arrived at the National park we parked our car on the site of the road and started to walk around one of the biggest Lakes of Scotland.

No roadtrip is complete Without some trouble, therefor when we got to the car, there were several signs blinking saying that we had to check the engine. Because we were in the middle of nowhere we decided to take the risk and try to Drive up to oban, where our hostel was. This however was a 2 hour Drive and after half an hour the car started to smell like somehting was burning. We stopped at the nearest village, where we had to knock on Doors to ask to use a phone because we had no cell service anymore. We called the triple a and they told us that as Long as the sign doesnt turn Red and the smell doesnt return, we should be able to make it to oban.

By Time we started driving again it was pitch Black outside and we had to take very Small and curvy roads which was quite adventurous. At some Point we almost ran out of gas but luckely we found a gas station Just in Time! We arrived at the hostel that Evening and we got one of their prettiest Rooms because the cheap room we booked was under Construction.

Day 2 - we started our day of early and left fr glencoe around 9am. Glencoe is an Area which contains beautiful Nature and has one of the highest Mountains of Scotland. First we went to Glen nevis, where the steall waterfall is. To get to the waterfall we had to hike for around 1 hour. The hike was beautiful and had a lot of Stones to climb and small waterfalls to Cross. At the End we arrived in a valley where we saw the huge steall waterfall at the far End. In order to get up close to the waterfall we had to Cross a rope Bridge which was quite an adventure. We climbed up close to the waterfall and took the Most beautiful Pictures.

After we saw the waterfall and hiked Back to the car, we drove to glenfinnan. There we saw the glenfinnan viaduct and the scottish monument with a beautiful Sunset.

At the Time we drove Back to the hostel it was already dark again. This night again we went to bed early because the next morning we were to head to isle of skye.

Day 3 - we started the morning of very early to get to isle of skye as soon as possible. It was so early we were even able to see the Sun rise. It rained the entire journey there, which was around 3,5 hours. However the road was still unbelievably beautiful. Luckkily when we came to our First destination it was Dry and we were able to enjoy our hike to the fairy Pools. Because we had had some delay getting to isle of skye we had not much sunlight left so we decided to Just Drive around the Coast and see the Sunset from there. We drove to our hostel in the dark and after we cooked a nice meal we went to bed again early.

Day 4 - we woke up really early to see as much as possible of isle of skye before we had to leave to Inverness. We started with the fairy Glen, which was pretty but dissapointingly small. We hiked up there for a while and then went on for the waterfall in the Coast (name). After that we went to the dinosaur footsteps, which we, unfortunately, couldn’t find. Although magnus and Jeroen are certain that they found new ones... We ended our day at (old mans tor) which was quite a climb. The information told us that it would only be 1 km but it turned out to be the longest 1 km of my life. When we finally came down and had had enough of the beautiful sight, we went to the car to drive through portree to Inverness. However before we had even driven 5 minuts, we got a flat tire. Ofcourse none of us had any cellreception… We discovered that there was a spare tire, but no one had ever changed a tire in their life before. Luckely we were able to stop two scottish men who where really nice and changed the tire for us. After that we drove to portree and there we had to buy a new tire at the garage. After the whole debacle we started driving towards Inverness. Where we arrived in the evening and ate at a cute little pub, castle tavern.

Day 5 - after the long day before, we decided to sleep in today and leave the city at 10. We went to a light house where we think we saw some seals in the far distance. Thereafter we drove around the Loch Ness lake and i went to the urquhart castle, which had a beautiful View over the lake. We drove around for a bit more but unfortunately the weather was horrible. There was one more sight we wanted to see before we headed back to the city, which was the culloden battle field. Unfortunately this also costed a lot of money which was why we didnt go in and bought some gifts at their shop instead.

Afterwards we went into the city and to the Most amazing second hand bookshop i have ever seen, called leakeys bookshop. There i found the Oxford companion to arts which i bought for only 9 pounds.

Day 6 - we left early to go to the cairngorms national park, which is the biggest national park of Scotland. There we stopped at the cutest little café to drink a nice cup of coffee. We had an amazing view from the window and saw all kinds of Tiny birds.

After that we went to the reindeer centre where we did a tour. The tour, together with around 50 people and a whole lot of children, took us up hill to a herd of reindeers, which we could feed and pet. I must say i was quite scared of them, but they were really nice and beautiful.

When we fed the reindeers and where ready to move on, we took a funicular up the highest mountain of cairngorms, called cairngorms, in other words, Blue mountain. Unfortunately we were not able to walk around at the top because there was no snow to protect the fragile ground. After we saw the top and went to the viewing teracce we went down with the funicular again. Surprisingly it was the shop at the Bottom of the mountain where we found the maps of Scotland which we had been looking for for quite a while.

We slowly drove to Aberdeen and got a good last night sleep at our hostel there.

Day 7 - The last day of our roadtrip we decided to drive along side the east coast back to Edinburgh where we had to hand in our car. We visited a beautifull castle in Stonehaven, called Dunottar Castle. Afterwards we went to St. Andrews which is a beautifull little town full of history. We arrived late in the evening at Edinburgh and there we took a night train back home to leeds.
